The Great Debate

Could your school debate their way to the top?

Since 2015, RSPCA Cymru have held the event – Animal Welfare: The Great Debate with KS3 students from schools across Wales. Following its continued success, we are inviting all schools across Wales and schools in the Leeds, Birmingham and Reading areas to take part in our 2019 events which include regional heats in March and April and finals in June.

Whose Responsibility is Animal Welfare?

11 to 14 year old students from schools across the country will debate special subjects, on the issues of animal welfare, which will be given to each participating school for them to research & prepare their debates in advance. Those schools who advance to the final will then debate the question 'Whose Responsibility is Animal Welfare?'; weighing up the various responsibilities of the different agencies involved - namely the governments in England and Wales, Local Government, RSPCA, vets, the police & the public.

The Great Debate is a unique opportunity for pupils to develop their debating skills alongside learning about animal welfare topics as they compete against other schools to be awarded the winning place.

*Please note we expect demand to be high, and places will be given on a first come, first served basis. The heats will take place in venues across England and Wales, as near as possible to the schools who have applied to take part. The final in Wales will be held in Cardiff in the original debating chamber of the Welsh Parliament and the final in England will be held in London.

Testimonials

What a fantastic day for our pupils – they and the school, who followed the debate on Twitter, are still buzzing.

The trickle down effect will have manifold consequences in terms of confidence, literacy and self perception for our students who thoroughly enjoyed the preparation and the debate experience.

This really is formative stuff and as a school we are so grateful to the RSPCA for giving our students the chance to participate.

My favourite part of the day, as a teacher, was seeing all of the hard work the students had put into it come to life. It was also a wonderful atmosphere with all schools supporting each other.
