Do people know what the numbers mean on eggs? Carry out a research project to find out and share what you learn.

Before you get started

What do egg codes mean?

The first number on an egg tells us how the hen was raised.

0 = Organic
1 = Free range
2 = Barn
3 = Caged

The two letters tell us in which country the egg was laid.

The final set of numbers tell us which farm raised the eggs.

Knowledge-based question
Can you explain what 0, 1, 2, and 3 mean in the first part of the egg code?

Attitude-based question
Should shops support higher-welfare egg farms when possible? (For example, yes, no, unsure)

Tip: Avoid personal questions for this activity so people remain anonymous.

Make a prediction

What do you think your results will show? Some example predictions are below.

Knowledge prediction
Most people will not be able to explain what 0, 1, 2, and 3 tell us in the first part of an egg code.

Attitude prediction
There will be a mixture of views, with people agreeing and disagreeing that shops should support higher-welfare egg farms.

Collect and analyse

Talk with your friends and family to collect your information.

Interviews are a great way to open up further questions and learn from each other. Make notes on any interesting points you had not previously considered.

When you have enough responses (aim for 10), bring your data together and be creative in how you communicate your results – try graphs, drawings or other visuals!
