Before you get started

Why this is important

Building shelters for wildlife gives them a safe place to rest.

Some animals, like beetles, will even use these spaces as a home for their young to hatch and grow.

A few points to consider

There are many different shelter designs to choose from.
Creating a variety of shelters gives animals the freedom to choose the one that suits them best.

Be sure to use only recently fallen logs and branches, as older ones may already be home to wildlife.

Make a pile of wood

The simplest design?

Gather a pile of logs and branches and place them together—it’s that easy!

You can create a more attractive design if you’re building this in your garden.

Make a stumpery

The best option for beetles?

Stick logs vertically into the ground to create the perfect space for them to thrive.
