rescue and care
We will improve welfare outcomes for animals in our care
Core services
Rescuing and caring for animals
We’re committed to making life better for animals through our rescue and care work, prioritising action to prevent and address cruelty and neglect. Building on our 200-year history, we’re always evolving. We make sure animals get the right treatment at the right time, in environments specifically designed for their wellbeing.
Our inspectorate plays a vital role — preventing harm, investigating offences, and rescuing animals 365 days a year. Alongside this, our hospitals and centres deliver expert, compassionate care, ensuring every animal’s voice is heard throughout their recovery. Thanks to the hard work of our staff and branch colleagues, more animals are living healthy, safe lives because of the care we provide.
Delivering our Core services means:
- providing specialist support from vets and behaviourists;
- delivering targeted prevention and education;
- investigating and prosecuting animal cruelty and criminal abuse;
- rehabilitating and caring for animals before rehoming or releasing them;
- training our partners in rescue and care to help even more animals.
Through evidence-led decisions and prevention, we’ll reduce the time animals spend in our care and help them thrive – whether that’s in our centres or safely at home.

Change activity
By developing modern, environmentally friendly facilities, replacing outdated systems with new digital tools, and streamlining our prosecutions and investigation processes, we’re making it possible for our teams to act faster and more effectively. These are the actions we’ll take.
Advancing legal powers for inspectors
Investigations and Prosecutions Operating Model
We’ll create a more streamlined, cost-effective and technology-enabled investigation and prosecution process that enhances outcomes, and ensures improved welfare for case animals.

Animal Journey
Our Animal Journey programme continues work to streamline and improve the journey of animals in our care, increasing our capacity to support more animals, prioritise animal wellbeing and reduce the length of time animals stay with us. Working closely with our branches, partners, and frontline teams, we’ll ensure every animal receives swift, compassionate, and evidence-based care, informed by expert data and insight. By making the right decisions at the right time, we can improve outcomes and deliver the best possible outcome for every animal in our care.
Sector-leading facilities and care
Animal 360 – Animal Shelter and ProVet
Animal 360 is replacing ageing systems with modern, cloud-based platforms in order to strengthen welfare oversight and improve long-term outcomes. It includes the implementation of two key systems: Animal Shelter and ProVet. Animal Shelter is our new cloud-based platform designed to give us a single, accurate view of every animal in our care. ProVet is a new cloud-based vet management system, which enables veterinary staff to record animal care and treatment information.
Estates programme
Through our Estates programme, we’re creating an estate that’s fit for the future, financially sustainable, environmentally responsible, and designed to empower our people, partners, and communities to deliver the very best for animals. Changes to our estate include building a new site in the North of England and delivering alternative service provision in the South.
