Before you get started

Why this is important

Providing a safe hiding spot helps cats and kittens feel secure in their surroundings. Whether it’s a simple box or a creative agility wall, creating a space to retreat reduces stress and promotes happiness - no matter your budget.

Creating your safe space

Two types of safe space

Cats need two types of safe spaces to feel truly secure:

  • A Place to Rest: This is a peaceful spot where your cat can relax and feel safe over extended periods, providing comfort and calm.
  • A Place to Dart: This is a quick, accessible hideaway for moments when your cat needs immediate security, usually for a short period.

Providing both spaces ensures your cat feels confident and protected, whatever the situation.

A place to rest

Ensure your cat’s resting space offers lasting security and meets their natural needs. Here’s what to consider for the ideal setup:

  • Height: A raised area offers a sense of security.
  • Accessibility: The space should be easy to reach at all times. For older cats, consider how they’ll access it comfortably and safely.
  • Privacy: Choose a spot that’s out of sight and quiet, giving your cat a truly private retreat.

Aim for at least one dedicated resting space per cat in your household, creating a haven that’s always there when they need it!

A place to dart

Set up cardboard boxes around your home as “dart-to” spaces, where your cat can quickly retreat if they feel startled.

Place them in active areas with unexpected sounds, like the kitchen or hallway, so your cat always has a safe spot nearby when they need it most. These simple hideaways offer instant comfort and security in busy spaces!

Rules of the safe space

To keep your cat’s safe space truly secure and comfortable, follow these guidelines:

  • Freedom to Come and Go: Cats should enter and leave their safe space freely—make sure it is always accessible to them.
  • Respect Their Privacy: Avoid disturbing your cat when they are in their safe space.
  • Maintain a familiar scent: Familiar smells help cats to feel secure. Spot clean when required to minimise smell disturbance.
