Make a butterfly café

Help butterflies stay healthy by offering them a safe,
nourishing space to feed.

Before you get started

Why is this important

Butterflies are not only beautiful to watch, they’re also essential pollinators. Sadly, the UK has seen a sharp decline in butterfly populations in recent years.

By creating a butterfly café in your garden or local green space, you’re offering them an extra food source when natural supplies are low. Small actions like this can give butterflies a lifeline and support the survival of native species.

Gather your materials

You will need a plate or shallow dish and some fruit.

Optional: String and a small hook (such as a keyring loop) if you'd like to hang your café

Offering fruit

Cut the fruit into small chunks and place them on the plate.

Sticky, overripe fruit is best for attracting butterflies (e.g. banana, orange, melon, raspberry, pineapple, and peach).

Placement for your café

Choose a sunny, sheltered spot, ideally near flowers.

Place the café off the ground.

If you prefer, you can create a hanging version using string and a hook to suspend it from a tree or post.
