Design your safe space

Use the 'Design' activity sheet to design the best safe space you can for your pet.

Think about what your pet likes. Then test your space by imagining:

  • How would your pet feel if they were tired?
  • How would they feel if they were scared?
  • Could they rest peacefully in this space?

Choose the best place for your safe space

You’ve designed your safe space, now decide where it should go. Use the ‘Audit’ activity sheet to help you choose the best place (this part is best suited for ages 7+).

Imagine your pet is:

  • Tired
  • Scared
  • Trying to rest

Ask yourself:

  • Where would your pet go?
  • Which place in your home feels safest?
  • Can they rest there without being disturbed?

Pick one or two possible spots.

Spot the dangers

You’ve chosen some possible locations, now check them more carefully to decide which is best.

Use the 'Audit' activity sheet to check your space more closely.

Ask:

  • Is it too noisy? (TV, shouting, footsteps)
  • Is it too busy? (people walking past)
  • Is it too cold or draughty? (near doors/windows)
  • Are there any dangers? (wires, clutter)
  • What would you change to make it safer and calmer?

Build your safe space

Use materials you already have (e.g. blankets, cushions, boxes) to build or set up your safe space.

  • Can you make it comfortable?
  • Can you make it quiet and calm?

Keeping your pet safe

A safe space only works if we respect it.

Use what you’ve learned to make a promise to your pet.
