Before you get started

Why this is important

Seeded apples help feed birds year-round, providing essential nourishment during key times:

  • Spring: When birds are feeding their young.
  • Summer: When dry ground makes food harder to find.
  • Autumn: As they moult, replace feathers, and prepare for winter.
  • Winter: When they need extra energy to survive the cold and prepare for spring nesting.

Make your seeded apple

Items you will need

You will need:

  • An apple
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Apple corer (or other tool)

Make a hole through the apple

Cut a hole through the apple.

Ask an adult for help to cut a hole through your apple, removing the core.

You can use an apple corer or another sharp tool to create a hole.

Add seeds to the apple

Take the pointy end of sunflower seeds and pierce them into the apple.

Using the seeds, you could draw a picture or write a word!

Hang the apple

Hang the apple in an open space where birds are likely to feel safe (somewhere away from cats!).

Make sure there’s a branch nearby for birds to stand on while they eat.
